Question about relativity.?
I’m not a theoretical physicist, I’m a graphic artist who is forced to work in the accounting department of a car dealership.

My mind starts to wander at times and I had this question. And feel free to correct me on my facts, because, as I said… i’m not a doctor of theoretical physics.

Relativity states (in part) that an object’s perception of time is warped by it’s relative speed to another object. i.e. as an object approaches the speed of light (which seems to vary based on the speed of it’s source) time slows down for the observer.

We’ve studied this by sending highly accurate clocks in to space at high speeds and noted their difference upon return.

Now, here is where my question lays. If we pick a currently unknown point as our "center" of the universe; where the Big Bang took place, and from which everything is moving away, that would be our reference point as a non-moving place where time goes at a certain rate. Now, since the earth is moving very quickly away from this point, time would go much slower on earth than it would for you standing at the center of the universe.

So, suppose someone left earth and headed toward me. They would age slower than someone standing on earth to their prospective, but faster than someone standing on earth to my perspective.

Using this theory, wouldn’t that astronaut be aging at an infinate number of rates relative to every perspective in the universe? How is that possible? How could, to the same person, 1 day be 28 hours relative to earth, AND 20 hours relative to earth at the same time just because you have 2 different viewers.
The post made about the twin paradox assumes 2 referrence points… one on earth, and one traveling… my question involves 3 points of referrence… one on earth, one in space, and one truely stationary in the center of the universe. when comparing how one item ages to another, the twin paradox answers my question, but when you have 2 observers, both of them moving at different speeds, the "traveling twin" would age both slower and faster then the twin who stayed on earth depending on if you asked the person on earth, or the person at the center of the universe… or perhaps im missing something…
Or let me phrase it this way:

To the person standing on earth, the spaceship would be the moving the fastest.

To the person standing at the center of the universe, the earth would be moving the fastest.

So, based on those reference points, the person in the space ship would age both faster AND slower than the person on earth.

I think you have formulated the twin paradox. It is explained why on wikipedia in a way better than I can ever explain. I think acceleration plays a key roleand lenght contraction (if you are going near the speed of light, the distance you have to travel appears shorter)

I’m getting sick of it. He has been doing this every year for several years now. Soon he will run out of teams that will want to use him. I think he just wants to ensure that his records won’t get broken by Peyton Manning. The first time his games started in a row streak has ended, I think he’ll be done. I figured he’d come back this year. That’s just his style. He’s getting old and his injuries are mounting up. Soon the injuries will prevent him from playing.

At least he is still playing good, but I just wish he’d quit all the waffling on whether he’ll play or not.

im definitely sick of it. if your gonna retire, retire for good. I hate athletes who retire and dont get over it. they get so tempted to "make a comeback" to satisfy their own ego. another good example is Floyd Mayweather Jr. Even Michael Jordans comeback with the Wizards was just horrible. I dont think i can ever recall a comeback that has been amazing with the exeption of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bull’s comeback after quitting professional baseball. Case in point, Brett Favre will never win another superbowl…especially now that he is with the Vikings.

How long can I go without sleep?
So it’s that time again, midterm exam season! And i’ve left a lot of things to do the night before, so I won’t be sleeping a lot this entire week. Mon-Fri I have to be up studying for most of the time, and i’m hoping to average an hours worth of sleep a night in naps. (Please don’t criticize as this isn’t my point).

With the aid of stimulants such as ephedrine, dexedrine (medicine used to help me study, concentrate, and not fall asleep) as well as the occasional rush of caffeine will no doubt put a strain on my body. I have only ever managed to pull 64h of consecutive non-sleep but this is nearly double that and i’m worried about the effects on my body, especially because I am not naturally staying awake…

My biggest concern, other then the lack of co-ordination and short term memory, is the effects on my actual heart. What do you think the chances are that I might have a heart attack? I mean i’m worried that this might happen because it is stressful and unnatural but I have to keep up my GPA..

I am taking the stimulants at fairly regular intervals and never all at the same time.
(Coffee in the morning and late late at night, dexedrine in between and maybe ephedrine when I want something less processed)

Should I be worried?

It is not normal or healthy for you to deprive yourself of sleep. In fact it could be counter productive, as you focus and memory are affected by lack of sleep. Taking all that medication is hard on your body. You need to get a minimum of 4-5 hours asleep a night. Then get up and study. By staying up to long you will get the shakes, memory problems, and the inability to focus. These things will not help you study. Take a break, get rest, studying will be more effective. Good luck

I took some sleeping tablets called Zopidem last year for 2 weeks, when I came off them I did not sleep for 3 days, It made me feel quite ill, I have insomnia and would often miss out on a nights sleep.

As much as you want technical help on this issue I can tell you that NO drug will help you learn and pass your exams better than sleep. 4/5 hours sleep a night will enable your brain to process everything you’ve crammed into it and improve your recall.
By depriving your brain of sleep it is impossible for it to retain everything you’ve studied as there is no "off time" for it to convert short-term memory to long-term.
If you’ve left things too late then you need to prioritize your study and learn the most important stuff first, get organized, stay fed (brain needs food!) get proper rest and don’t leave it so blinkin late next time! xxx
